ISLAMABAD – More than a 100 students from Quaid-e-Azam University were arrested by police on Monday after they returned to protest against a decision to raise their tuition fees.
According to the police, the students grounded themselves in front of the university buses, after which the police sprung into action and detained them.
It was earlier reported that classes are likely to resume from today in a bid to end the three-week break which came due to the student protests.
The university administration and the protesting students have held negotiations on Thursday night, following which the decision to raise the fees was taken back after passing of 16 days.
However, the issue of students detained during earlier clashes still remains unsolved. The university’s syndicate has made a three-member committee to review the cases of expelled students.
Since early October, QAU students have been protesting for better accommodation facilities at the university and cancellation of the recent fees hike.
Due to the uncontrolled nature of the protests, police reinforcements were called in to control the situation. The police even fired tear-gas shells in order to disperse the protesting students.
Ranger was called in to control the situation and many injured students were shifted to a hospital. It is reported that some students even received gunshot wounds.
The police have accused many students of having possession of illegal weapons, creating havoc and even attempted murder.
